The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. SRLP is a collective organization founded on the understanding that gender self-determination is inextricably intertwined with racial, social and economic justice. Therefore, we seek to increase the political voice and visibility of low-income people of color who are transgender, intersex, or gender non-conforming. SRLP works to improve access to respectful and affirming social, health, and legal services for our communities. We believe that in order to create meaningful political participation and leadership, we must have access to basic means of survival and safety from violence.
I really love this organization because it is vital to society right now. Many people choose not to understand or accept people from the transgendered community and it's really a shame. Someone who is transgendered is just as human as you or I, and deserve the same legal rights and representation as everyone else. The reason that I love this project is because I am very much against transgendered prison inmates being subjected to disgusting and unfair placement and treatment in the prison system. Someone who is male to female should NOT be placed in general population to be abused and raped everyday. And they should also not be placed solely in 23 hour solitary confinement in order to protect them. Also they are usually not allowed to continue hormone treatment even though other inmates are allowed their prescribed medication. This can lead to serious health and mental complications.
